Learning Objectives:
  1. Understand the vast variability in which providers address IPV in the clinical setting.
  2. Identify both positive and negative behaviors currently used by providers to manage a disclosure of IPV.
  3. Recognize the importance of the need to develop universal training techniques to teach medical providers how to adequately respond to and manage IPV in the clinical setting.
Description:
We evaluated patient-provider conversations about IPV during a first obstetrical visit. Specifically, we focus on both helpful strategies and detrimental approaches used by providers when responding to past and current IPV disclosure. Our primary focus is on dissecting and evaluating how providers actually respond to IPV disclosure in clinical situations, because we know that a provider’s response can contribute to patient’s willingness to (1) disclose in future clinical situations or (2) utilize IPV resources.
