Obamacare and domestic violence: Understanding the affordable care act and other federal health policy recommendations on intimate partner violence screening and brief counseling.

Saturday, March 21, 2015: 11:25 AM-12:45 PM
Congressional Hall B (Renaissance Washington, DC Downtown Hotel)
Speakers:
Kiersten Stewart, MA, Futures Without Violence
Lena O'Rourke, MPP, O’Rourke Health Policy Strategies

Learning Objectives:
  1. Understand new ACA coverage and enrollment options for all beneficiaries, including Medicaid and the Insurance Marketplace.
  2. Have a working understanding of the new benefits offered under the ACA, what patients and providers can expect from the benefits, and the limitations of those services.
  3. Understand the USPSTF recommendations on domestic violence.

Description:
The ACA changed how people can buy health insurance and expanded what plans must cover. Insurers can no long discriminate against patients with a history of IPV; and there are new medical and behavioral health benefits mandated, including coverage of screening for IPV. The U.S. Preventive Services Task force currently recommends screening and interventions for women of child bearing age. This session explores the new health insurance landscape, and opportunities and challenges for enrolling in coverage and accessing trauma-informed services.
