Learning Objectives:
  1. Describe key challenges and lessons learned in developing a healthcare based response to children exposed to violence.
  2. Recognize the considerations for deciding how to identify kids exposed to violence, trauma and other adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and help children recover and thrive.
  3. Discuss what needs to be in place to build capacity for trauma informed responses, minimize unintended consequences, more equitably support families and meet providers’ needs.

Description:
Childhood exposure to violence (CEV) is associated with long-term physical, psychological, and emotional damage. ACES research has made a tremendous contribution to the national conversation regarding CEV and health later in life, but how do we provide responsible, effective and practical information; and ensure that providers are trauma informed local service system responsive to the thousands of children that can be identified everyday? Lessons from two Defending Childhood communities will be presented focused on their implications for health settings.
