  1. Understand how gender based violence impacts many of the millennium development goals.
  2. Understand key elements of successful international responses to violence that have improved safety and health.
  3. Contribute to a discussion of a post 2015 development agenda that addresses health responses to gender based violence.

Description:
As the world examines its progress in achieving the 2015 Millennium Development Goals, awareness is growing globally on the extent to which gender-based violence hinders our efforts to improve women and children’s health and reduce poverty. This session will gather some of the leading researchers, practitioners, funders and thought-leaders from around the world to look at the state of the science on gender-based violence and health. Specifically, the relationship between gender-based violence and family planning, maternal, infant and child health and women’s health and safety more broadly will be addressed. The session will close as we strategize together around what’s needed to scale up and expand evidence-based GBV programming globally. Attention will be paid to newer efforts in low- and middle-income countries.
