Room 8/9 (Renaissance Washington, DC Downtown Hotel)
Speaker:
Julia F. Weber, JD, MSW, NA

Learning Objectives:
  1. Describe how institutional bias can have an impact on professionals working with victims/survivors in the field of intimate partner violence prevention.
  2. Explain how to recognize and address biases so as to approach violence prevention work with patients and clients more mindfully.
  3. Identify the problematic role bias plays in limiting access to services.

Description:
In this interactive workshop, participants will consider how their expectations of patients or clients might affect their interactions and will identify ways of reconsidering their perspectives so as to most effectively provide information and assistance. Discussion will focus on understanding personal and structural biases that can influence how we understand intimate partner violence along with gender, race, class, sexual orientation, and intersectionality. Small groups will focus on a problem-solving exercise leading to facilitated discussion that meets the learning objectives.
