Intersectionality and gender based violence

Thursday, March 29, 2012: 1:00 PM-4:30 PM
Nob Hill B-C (San Francisco Marriott Marquis)
Speakers:
Sujata Warrier, PhD, NYS Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence
Julia Perilla, PhD, Georgia State University

Learning Objectives:
  1. Describe the concept of intersectionality and its connections to gender based violence
  2. Use an intersectional approach in order to think and act differently about identity, equality, power, strength and resilience
  3. Apply an intersectional analysis and approach to a case fact pattern.

Description:
This session will explore the concept of intersectionality and help participants apply both the concept and skills when working with survivors of gender-based violence. In use from 1984, the concept forces practitioners, researchers and advocates to move away from binary thinking about power to specific contexts, distinct experiences and qualitative experiences of oppression. Evidence will be provided on how intersecting oppressions along with the strength and resilience of both adult and youth survivors provide a complex synergy that produce some of the disadvantages in terms of public health outcomes. Discussion will be grounded on the everyday realities of social and health inequities that drive health disparities. Using case examples, participants will develop skills that will enable them to work with survivors in a holistic manner.
