Presentation Format:
Innovative/Promising Practice Program Report

Learning Objectives:
  1. Explore an approach to addressing adolescent partner violence in teenage patients which encompasses the following skills: ask, acknowledge, assess, assist
  2. Recognize the boundaries between child protection laws and adolescent health rights
  3. Demonstrate an understanding on approaches to supporting health care providers with adolescent patients who do not want disclosure or referral
Description:
This presentation covers the development, implementation and evaluation of a two-hour training using local patterns, role play and vignettes, tested in over 60 healthcare providers serving adolescents. It was designed to assist in recognizing, acknowledging, assessing, supporting and appropriately referring teenagers experiencing partner violence. IPV among teenagers is very common but little guidance exists for healthcare providers on how to recognize IPV and support adolescents experiencing IPV. Areas of concern involved child protection and supporting adolescents facing ongoing IPV.
