  1. Identify barriers to achieving sustained improvement in the health care response to treatment and prevention of intimate partner violence
  2. Describe the 5 elements of the, Health Care Can Change from Within Model, for achieving sustained improvement in the treatment and prevention of intimate partner violence
  3. Explore evidence supporting the Change from Within Model, including sustained improvement in (1) health professionals' knowledge and attitudes, (2) quality of care provided by the health clinic, and (3) health and well being for battered women who are patients at the health clinic
Description:
Intimate partner violence is a serious health and public health problem. Research shows that health professionals can learn to provide treatment and prevention services for victims of IPV, but changes in provider behavior are not sustained. We describe an innovative model (Health Care Can Change from Within) for achieving sustained improvement in treatment and prevention of IPV. We share results from a 5-year evaluation demonstrating improvement in provider behavior, quality of care, and health and well being for battered women.
