Learning Objectives:
- Identify differences in providing acute care for pediatric versus adult victims of sexual assault.
- Describe differences in evidence collection principles between the Adult and Pediatric Sexual Evidence Collection Kits in Massachusetts.
- Discuss findings from a qualitative research study that explored the attitudes of Adult/Adolescent Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) and the potential for being cross-trained to use the pediatric sexual assault evidence kit.
Findings from a qualitative study that included 40-80 Adult/Adolescent Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners (SANEs) will be presented. The purpose of this study was to describe the attitudes of the SANEs regarding the possibility of being cross-trained to care for pediatric patients (<12 years) and use a pediatric sexual assault evidence kit. These findings have implications to address the disparities in caring for children who experience sexual assault and require acute care and forensic evidence collection.
