Learning Objectives:
  1. Describe links between three types of partner abuse and disengagement coping strategies and styles in women presenting in general practice.
  2. Be better prepared to treat women experienced physical, emotional and severe combined abuse.
Description:
This current study examines the predictors of disengagement coping strategies and styles among abused women attending general practice. Predictor variables are categorized as types of intimate partner abuse. Data from the cross sectional study in 24 practices (St Petersburg, Russia) are used (n = 223). Results show that physical abuse is associated with accepting responsibility. Emotional and severe combined abuse interacts with contradictory coping strategies of accepting responsibility and escape-avoidance, as well as with less frequent use of social diversion.
