Patty Wilson, MSN, RN, Johns Hopkins University
Lena O'Rourke, MPP, O’Rourke Health Policy Strategies

Learning Objectives:
  1. The domestic violence coverage requirements in the Affordable Care Act and the practice recommendations from the US Preventive Services Task Force.
  2. How new service delivery models can support an improved health response to domestic violence and How women’s health research can further inform health responses to domestic violence.
  3. How these new policy and practice models can impact health care and domestic violence advocacy as well as women’s health and safety in their communities.

Description:
With the passage of the Affordable Care Act, most health plans are required to cover certain preventive services including domestic violence screening and brief counseling with no cost sharing. Additionally, the US Preventive Services Task Force issued recommendations to support screening and intervention for intimate partner violence. With these and other important shifts in our health system, addressing domestic violence in health settings is becoming the standard of care. This session will review the new health policies regarding domestic violence, will discuss how a comprehensive response to domestic violence could be integrated into new health care delivery models (such as the patient centered primary care model) and will consider how research that is focused on women’s health can inform the practice changes that are taking place nationwide. Speakers will have a facilitated discussion of the implications of these policy changes on clinical practice as well as on domestic violence advocacy programs across the U.S.
