Learning Objectives:
  1. Share a foundational introduction to the research on social determinants of health.
  2. Articulate promising state and local strategies to address interpersonal violence together with racism and inequity.
  3. Apply this information to our approaches and priorities regarding gender-based violence and childhood exposure to trauma prevention and health system response.

Description:
Gender-based violence arises from an interplay among personal and socio-cultural factors. More information is needed regarding the relative importance of these various factors, how they are interrelated and how they may interact with one another to influence health outcomes and risk of victimization as well as the perpetration of violence. As the field develops there is increasing attention on how these various factors influence children and impact their health outcomes as adults. Sir Michael Marmot, one of England’s leading authorities on public health and social inequalities, will review the research on social determinants of health and how social inequalities and life conditions result in risk factors for disease and health. This will be followed by a conversation with U.S based experts on the topic to discuss gender-based violence and its interplay with poverty, racism and inequity. Experts will share a variety of local and state policy and practice changes as well as some of the most innovative community partnerships focused on addressing prevention, resiliency and healing in order to build healthier and more accountable, violence-free communities.
