Learning Objectives:
  1. Be better able to identify signs of elder abuse and respond effectively to the complex issues it can raise, especially in light of the inadequate resources available to older victims and the need to balance older peoples’ rights to autonomy and safety.
  2. Be better able to describe existing research about elder abuse relating to prevalence, risk factors, health implications, and forensic markers.
  3. Become more conversant about elder abuse policy issues, including its recognition (or lack thereof) as a public health issue, its relationship to domestic violence, its cost, and current initiatives to improve response and prevention.

Description:
A caregiver says she’s overwhelmed and sometimes “handles her demented mother roughly.” Is it caregiver stress, power and control, something else? Does it matter? Which bruises are suspicious? An older Cambodian patient doesn’t buy his medications so his son can buy a car. Is this financial exploitation or a family pooling resources? An older patient has pressure ulcers in a facility. Are they caused by neglect? Join nationally-renowned elder abuse experts for a lively and interactive discussion about elder abuse, public health, prevention, and balancing autonomy and safety. They’ll explore cases and controversies, research and policy initiatives (and deficits), and practical ways to help older people who are at risk or victimized.
