Presentation Format:
Innovative/Promising Practice Program Report
Learning Objectives:
- Identify ethical and safety challenges associated with research on interventions to prevent VAW.
- Describe strategies to promote the safety of researchers and participants involved in VAW intervention studies and conduct such research ethically.
Globally, research on interventions to prevent violence against women (VAW) is increasing. Unlike studies conducted on the prevalence, correlates and health impacts of VAW, which have largely been cross-sectional, intervention research is often longitudinal and experimental or quasi-experimental. Thus, new ethical and safety challenges unaddressed by the World Health Organization’s “Putting Women First” guidelines are emerging. We will present additional ethics and safety recommendations for VAW intervention research that were developed through a literature review and consultations with experts.
