Room 2 (Renaissance Washington, DC Downtown Hotel)
Speaker:
Emily F. Rothman, ScD, Boston University School of Public Health

Presentation Format:
Scientific Program Report

Learning Objectives:
  1. Understand how the commercial sexual exploitation of children (CSEC) is related to dating violence
  2. Be familiar with some intervention and prevention strategies for domestic CSEC in the U.S. from community-based agencies (not law enforcement).
  3. Formulate research questions and/or practice ideas about the intersection of CSEC and dating violence.
Description:
Approximately 100,000-300,000 youth are trafficked for commercial sexual exploitation inside the U.S. every year. Many pimps recruit girls into sex work by pretending to be a boyfriend. We will present qualitative data collected from CSEC survivors who experienced dating violence. The presentation will explore the overlap between CSEC and dating violence, discuss hospital guidelines for recognizing CSEC patients, and suggest directions for future research on this emerging and critical topic.
