Learning Objectives:
  1. be able to identify why healthcare providers play an especially important role in the identification of Asian-Pacific Islander victims.
  2. be able to identify ways in which they may culturally tailor their interventions and approach to victim identification so that they may be better received by Asian-Pacific Islander victims.
Description:
Intimate partner violence (IPV) occurs across all ethnic, racial, and class groups, but the way it is perceived and handled varies among these groups. The goal of this study is to describe perspectives of IPV experts regarding barriers and strategies in identifying and addressing IPV in Asian-Pacific Islander (API) communities. The data indicates that physicians play a key role in identifying API victims and that safety messages must be framed within a cultural context that resonates with API values.
