Presentation Format:
Innovative/Promising Practice Program Report

Learning Objectives:
  1. To better understand the impact of Veterans’ Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) on their intimate partner relationships.
  2. To further understand these dynamics when intimate partner violence (IPV) also exists.
Description:
This presentation highlights qualitative analyses of Gerlock's 'Relationships and PTSD' master study conducted at the VA Puget Sound. The impact of Veterans' Posttraumatic Stress Disorder on intimate partner relationships, as described by 441 Veteran and partner participating couples, is outlined. Dynamics that exist in distressed couples, in thriving couples, and in couples who have comorbid PTSD and IPV are presented. Possible applications to screening and intervention for health care providers are suggested.
