Innovative/Promising Practice Program Report

Learning Objectives:
  1. Define and describe Ciudad Mujer (CM) in El Salvador
  2. Compare and contrast CM with the US-based Family Justice Center concept
  3. Discuss challenges and opportunities faced by CM in respect to community and gender-based violence
Description:
El Salvador (ES) suffers from widespread violent crime, including violence against women. Until recently, although illegal, domestic violence and rape were considered unavoidable, and therefore seldom disclosed or reported. Efforts addressing violence against women are underway in ES, including the recent launch of the Ciudad Mujer (CM) network. This presentation will describe the CM concept, outline similarities and differences from Family Justice Centers in the United States and highlight challenges and opportunities envisioned as CM grows in size and scope.
