Saturday, March 31, 2012: 11:25 AM-12:45 PM
Pacific B (San Francisco Marriott Marquis)
Speaker:
Robin Mason, PhD, Women's College Hospital and the University of Toronto

Presentation Format:
Innovative/Promising Practice Program Report

Learning Objectives:
  1. Identify a process for developing a competency based curriculum where there is scant research to draw upon
  2. Recognize risk factors for perpetration of DV including lethal violence
  3. Demonstrate an understanding of the issues facing healthcare providers who may have both the victim and perpetrator of DV in their practice
Description:
Domestic violence curricula for healthcare providers generally focus on victims of abuse, not perpetrators. Our evidence-based, competency-driven, curriculum also focused on victims of DV until family physicians voiced concerns about perpetrators in their practice. Developing competencies to guide a new curriculum about perpetrators proved problematic due to significant research gaps. In this presentation we discuss the method developed to determine and validate competencies related to perpetration of DV, review the content of the new modules and introduce the online program.
