Learning Objectives:
  1. Examine a non-traditional approach to meeting the acute medical / forensic needs of sexual assault victims with limited healthcare resources
  2. Recognize the magnitude of and challenges in responding to sexual and domestic violence against AI / AN women

Description:
The SAFESTAR program will train lay persons in Indian Country to 1) deliver emergency sexual assault first aid and health care (including pregnancy prophylaxis) 2) make referrals for follow-up healthcare and other services 3) provide community education and 4) collect sexual assault forensic evidence, submit the customized “rape kits” to the crime lab, and provide testimony in tribal and federal courts. SAFESTAR is for use in communities that do not have meaningful access to Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners.
