Learning Objectives:
- be able to identify common barriers service providers encounter in addressing IPV with pregnant and parenting adolescents
- be able to describe potential intervention strategies that service providers employ to address IPV with their pregnant and parenting adolescent clients
Data from focus groups with service providers (n=43) working with pregnant and parenting adolescents was thematically analyzed to increase knowledge of barriers and strategies for addressing IPV. Key barriers included: adolescent clients' definitions of love, intergenerational patterns, cultural norms about gender and violence, and developmental-contextual considerations. Providers responded by working to identify IPV, building relationships, and taking appropriate action. Providers may benefit from increased training and skill development, and adopting a team approach to increase effectiveness with challenging cases.
