Learning Objectives:
  1. be able to identify common barriers service providers encounter in addressing IPV with pregnant and parenting adolescents
  2. be able to describe potential intervention strategies that service providers employ to address IPV with their pregnant and parenting adolescent clients
Description:
Data from focus groups with service providers (n=43) working with pregnant and parenting adolescents was thematically analyzed to increase knowledge of barriers and strategies for addressing IPV. Key barriers included: adolescent clients' definitions of love, intergenerational patterns, cultural norms about gender and violence, and developmental-contextual considerations. Providers responded by working to identify IPV, building relationships, and taking appropriate action. Providers may benefit from increased training and skill development, and adopting a team approach to increase effectiveness with challenging cases.
