Presentation Format:
Innovative/Promising Practice Program Report

Learning Objectives:
  1. Demonstrate an understanding of the lifetime prevalence and 12 month incidence of partner abuse in general population and specific populations, taking account of ethnicity and primary care
  2. Identify specific indigenous stressors underlying prevalence
  3. On the basis of women's overwhelming support of the acceptibility and appropriateness of routine enquiry in primary care, be encouraged that this is an effective, trusted and empowering environment for women to access information and support.
Description:
As a result of contracted training based on best practice Partner and Child Abuse Guidelines developed by the Ministry of Health in 2002, New Zealand's primary care practitioners i.e. family doctors, general practice nurses, midwives, community well child nurses, family planning practitioners, are now providing women with routine inquiry on an annual basis, as part of normal consultations. With an ethnically diverse population, teaching is tailored to reflect culturally specific concerns, and women report favorably on face-to-face questioning.
