Learning Objectives:
  1. Identify some of the health impacts of abuse experienced in older age
  2. Explore the types of abuse women have experienced in older age
  3. Recognize some of the issues inherent in trying to measure or identify abusive events experienced in older age
Description:
This research found that some aspects of abuse experienced by women in older age were associated with survival. By analyzing data collected by The Australian Longitudinal Study on Women’s Health, researchers were able to show that mortality was associated with coercion (eg being forced to undertake activities), dependence (eg not having privacy, not trusting family member/s) and dejection (eg sadness, feeling unwanted) among a representative sample of 12,066 older Australian women.
