Presentation Format:
Scientific Program Report

Learning Objectives:
  1. Analyze the differential safety outcomes of abused women who use a shelter compared to women who receive a protection order
  2. Discuss policy and practice implications for two global models of care
  3. Apply outcome knowledge to their practice setting
Description:
Worldwide, two models dominate care for abused women: social services of safe shelter and counselling, and legal actions of arrest and protection orders. Are shelters effective in keeping women and children safe? To determine the differential safety, health, economic, and general functioning outcomes of abused following a shelter stay compared to application for a protection order a 3-year prospective study of 300 women is underway. Initial findings will be presented and implications for global policy and practice standards.
