Innovative/Promising Practice Program Report

Learning Objectives:
  1. List risk factors for teen dating violence perpetration
  2. Describe a model to examine pathways leading to change in dating abuse behaviors
  3. Identify empirically-based strategies for prevention programming with at-risk youth
Description:
This report examines abusive dating behaviors in a diverse group of at-risk youth with the goal to develop an empirical basis for prevention strategies. Structural equation modeling is used to examine the pathways between healthy relationship behaviors (assertiveness, active listening), dating abuse norms, controlling behavior, and emotional, physical, and sexual abuse perpetration. Results suggest the need to counteract violence supportive norms and to teach communication skills while helping youth to differentiate between assertiveness, controlling behavior and emotional abuse.
