Speaker:
Terry Towne, ATR-BC, Drawing on Our Strengths

Presentation Format:
Innovative/Promising Practice Program Report

Learning Objectives:
  1. Define art therapy
  2. Describe a minimum of three (3) art therapy goals in treating victims/perpetrators of family violence
  3. Identify a minimum of two (2) art therapy intervention strategies for use in the clinical treatment of family violence
Description:
We’re all familiar with the quote from Napoleon Bonaparte, “A picture is worth a thousand words.” For primary, secondary and tertiary victims as well as for perpetrators, family violence is a difficult, often painful, topic to discuss. Whether used individually or within a group setting, the art therapist encourages the use of a variety art materials to promote creative expression, self-awareness/self-reflection, explore and set life goals, integrate insights and new learning and improve self-esteem.
